The set earned 201,000 equivalent album units &#8212; a better-than-expected start &#8212; in the week ending Oct. 27, according to Nielsen Music.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joanne<\/em> was released on Oct. 21 through Streamline\/Interscope Records.<\/p>\n<p>The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/chart-beat\/6320099\/billboard-200-makeover-streams-digital-tracks\">multi-metric consumption<\/a>, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Nov. 12-dated chart (where <em>Joanne<\/em> bows at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard\u2019s websites on Tuesday, Nov. 1.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joanne<\/em> follows Lady Gaga\u2019s previous chart-toppers <em>Cheek to Cheek <\/em>(with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/430193\/tony-bennett\/chart\">Tony Bennett<\/a>, in 2014), <em>Artpop<\/em> (2013) and <em>Born This Way<\/em> (2011).<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded-content embedded-content--readmore is-embed-initialized\" data-nid=\"7557638\" data-nodetype=\"article\" data-template=\"readmore\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Joanne<\/em>&#8216;s bow of 201,000 units is larger than what industry forecasters estimated. On Oct. 25, sources had pegged the album to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/chart-beat\/7556820\/lady-gaga-michael-buble-billboard-200-top-two\">start with around 180,000<\/a> (and that was an upgrade from 140,000 a few days earlier).<\/p>\n<p>The album\u2019s 201,000 launch is the fourth-largest debut of 2016, and the second-biggest for a woman. Ahead of it are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/301284\/drake\/chart\">Drake<\/a>\u2019s <em>Views<\/em> (1.04 million), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/281569\/beyonce\/chart\">Beyonce<\/a>\u2019s <em>Lemonade<\/em> (653,000) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/302378\/frank-ocean\/chart\">Frank Ocean<\/a>\u2019s <em>Blonde<\/em> (276,000 units).<\/p>\n<p>In terms of traditional sales, <em>Joanne<\/em> sold 170,000 &#8212; the seventh-largest bow of the year, and the second-biggest for a woman. The only larger starts were registered by Drake\u2019s <em>Views<\/em> (852,000 copies sold), Beyonce\u2019s <em>Lemonade<\/em> (485,000), Frank Ocean\u2019s <em>Blonde<\/em> (232,000), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/300407\/david-bowie\/chart\">David Bowie<\/a>\u2019s <em>Blackstar<\/em> (174,000), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/277326\/radiohead\/chart\">Radiohead<\/a>\u2019s <em>A Moon Shaped Pool<\/em> (173,000) and\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/298592\/blink-182\/chart\">Blink-182<\/a>\u2019s <em>California<\/em> (172,000).<\/p>\n<p>Lady Gaga was in full-on promotion mode during the album\u2019s debut week. She <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/7550004\/lady-gaga-brings-a-yo-to-saturday-night-live-watch\">performed<\/a> on NBC\u2019s <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> (Oct. 22), sat down for an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/pop\/7550055\/lady-gaga-howard-stern-interview-10-things-vault-cooper-superbowl\">interview<\/a> with SiriusXM\u2019s Howard Stern (Oct. 24), took part in James Corden\u2019s popular \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/7556841\/lady-gaga-james-corden-carpool-karaoke\">Carpool Karaoke<\/a>\u201d segment of his CBS show <em>The Late Late Show<\/em> (Oct. 25) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/pop\/7557719\/lady-gaga-dive-bar-tour-los-angeles-silver-lake-recap-video\">concluded<\/a> her Bud Light-sponsored dive bar tour in Los Angeles on Oct. 27.<\/p>\n<p>Also notable: Gaga is the first woman with four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 in the 2010s. She passes Beyonce and Taylor Swift, each with three during the decade.
