It becomes the rapper\/singer\u2019s second career leader, following \u201cSay So,\u201d featuring Nicki Minaj, in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, \u201cPaint the Town Red\u201d marks the first rap Hot 100 No. 1 in over a year, ending the longest break for the genre atop the chart since 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hot 100\u2019s new No. 1 also brings late legendary songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David back to the summit for the first time since 2004, thanks to its sample of Dionne Warwick\u2019s classic \u201cWalk on By.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"650\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m4_9TFeMfJE?si=E5FKmHuVyT4wdEnC\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at the Hot 100 coronation of \u201cPaint the Town &nbsp;Red\u201d (released on Kemosabe\/RCA Records), the 1,155th No. 1 in the chart\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/hot-100-co-creator-seymour-stein-interview\/\">65-year history<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Streams, sales &amp; airplay:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cPaint the Town Red\u201d drew 32.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 14%) and 27.7 million streams (up 10%) and sold 8,000 downloads (up 32%) in the Sept. 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate, as it wins the Hot 100\u2019s top Streaming and Sales Gainer awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The single holds at its No. 2 high on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/streaming-songs\">Streaming Songs<\/a>&nbsp;chart and pushes 6-5 on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/digital-song-sales\/\">Digital Song Sales<\/a>&nbsp;and 17-15 on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/radio-songs\/\">Radio Songs<\/a>, hitting new bests on the latter two rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Doja Cat\u2019s second Hot 100 No. 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;Doja Cat claims her second Hot 100 leader, following &nbsp;\u201cSay So,\u201d featuring Nicki Minaj, for a week in May 2020. Two weeks ago, \u201cPaint the Town Red,\u201d which has ridden a wave of virality on TikTok, became her seventh top 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song is from Doja Cat\u2019s fourth studio album,&nbsp;<em>Scarlet<\/em>, due Sept. 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First rap No. 1 in over a year:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cPaint the Town Red\u201d marks the first rap track (defined as songs that have hit or are eligible to appear on&nbsp;<em>Billboard<\/em>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/rap-song\/\">Hot Rap Songs<\/a>&nbsp;chart) to lead the Hot 100 since Nicki Minaj\u2019s \u201cSuper Freaky Girl,\u201d which ruled upon its debut atop the chart dated Aug. 27, 2022. Doja Cat ends a 54-week break between rap No. 1s (during which three rap titles peaked at No. 2: Lil Durk\u2019s \u201cAll My Life,\u201d featuring J. Cole; Drake\u2019s \u201cSearch &amp; Rescue\u201d; and Drake and 21 Savage\u2019s \u201cRich Flex\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the 2022-23 break, the last time the Hot 100 went without a rap champ longer was pre- and post-Y2K: after Will Smith\u2019s \u201cWild Wild West,\u201d featuring Dru Hill and Kool Moe Dee, reigned for a week in July 1999, rap was absent from the top spot until Shaggy\u2019s \u201cIt Wasn\u2019t Me,\u201d featuring Ricardo \u201cRikRok\u201d Ducent, began a two-week command in February 2001 \u2013 ending a drought of 79 weeks, or just over 18 months, and 22 No. 1s without a rap leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 54 frames between the dominations of \u201cSuper Freaky Girl\u201d and \u201cPaint the Town Red,\u201d 15 songs topped the Hot 100, ranging from pop to R&amp;B, country and rock\/alternative.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/no-rap-songs-one-year-hot-100-nicki-minaj-1235400198\/\">Click here<\/a>&nbsp;for a deeper dive into key factors that contributed to rap\u2019s shutout from No. 1 over the past year-plus until this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Country\u2019s command halted:<\/strong>&nbsp;Meanwhile, with the return of rap atop the Hot 100, a streak for country ends, as \u201cPaint the Town Red\u201d stops a record run of four consecutive country No. 1s, over the past six weeks. On the Sept. 9-dated chart, Zach Bryan\u2019s \u201cI Remember Everything,\u201d featuring Kacey Musgraves, debuted at No. 1, supplanting Anthony Oliver Music\u2019s \u201cRich Men North of Richmond\u201d after two weeks on top (Aug. 26 and Sept. 2). Before that, Morgan Wallen\u2019s \u201cLast Night\u201d rebounded for its last two of 16 total weeks at No. 1 (Aug. 12 and 19), directly following Jason Aldean\u2019s one-week reign with \u201cTry That in a Small Town\u201d (Aug. 5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Five-week climb to No. 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cPaint the Town Red\u201d reaches No. 1 in its fifth week on the Hot 100, competing what\u2019s become a rare multiple-week ascent to the top in 2023; it debuted at No. 15 on the Aug. 19 chart. The previous five new No. 1s (discounting \u201cLast Night,\u201d which logged a record-tying five distinct stays at No. 1 beginning in March) all debuted at the apex: \u201cI Remember Everything\u201d; \u201cRich Men North of Richmond\u201d; \u201cTry That in a Small Town\u201d; Jung Kook\u2019s \u201cSeven,\u201d featuring Latto (July 29); and Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s \u201cVampire\u201d (July 15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the launch of \u201cVampire\u201d (and 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for \u201cLast Night\u201d in May-July), SZA\u2019s \u201cKill Bill\u201d hit No. 1 in its 19th week on the chart (April 29) \u2013 helped in part by a remix released in that survey\u2019s tracking week with Doja Cat (who did not receive billing on SZA\u2019s song, as the remix did not account for a majority of its consumption that week).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bacharach, David, back at No. 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cPaint the Town Red\u201d samples Dionne Warwick\u2019s standard \u201cWalk on By,\u201d which hit No. 6 on the Hot 100 in 1964.
