Of that sum, 55,000 were in traditional album sales. The set was released Aug. 18 through the band&#8217;s own Procrastinate! Music Traitors label, and is the first album from the band in nearly eight years.<\/p>\n<p>The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/chart-beat\/6320099\/billboard-200-makeover-streams-digital-tracks\">multi-metric consumption<\/a>, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new\u00a0Sept. 9-dated chart (where\u00a0<em>Science Fiction<\/em>\u00a0debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard&#8217;s websites on Tuesday\u00a0(Aug. 29).<\/p>\n<p><em>Science Fiction<\/em>\u00a0is currently only available through streaming services and for sale as a digital album. A physical release on CD and vinyl LP is due Oct. 18. (A number of other albums have topped the chart in 2017 without a physical album release, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/1490118\/drake\/chart\">Drake<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>More Life<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/302577\/future\/chart\">Future<\/a>&#8216;s self-titled album and\u00a0<em>HNDRXX<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/5650707\/migos\/chart\">Migos<\/a>&#8216;\u00a0<em>Culture<\/em>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/281681\/big-sean\/chart\">Big Sean<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>I Decided<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Science Fiction<\/em>\u00a0is the third rock album to lead the Billboard 200 in 2017, following\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/279841\/arcade-fire\/chart\">Arcade Fire<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Everything Now<\/em>\u00a0(Aug. 19) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/307438\/linkin-park\/chart\">Linkin Park<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>One More Light<\/em>\u00a0(June 10).<\/p>\n<p>Further,\u00a0<em>Science Fiction<\/em>\u00a0also debuts at No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart, as the set was self-released by the band. It is the first independently distributed album to top the Billboard 200 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, five independently distributed albums led the chart:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/310639\/metallica\/chart\">Metallica<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Hardwired\u2026 To Self-Destruct\u00a0<\/em>(Dec. 10, 2016; released on the band&#8217;s Blackened Records, distributed via Alternative Distribution Alliance [ADA]),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/304236\/jason-aldean\/chart\">Jason\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/304236\/jason-aldean\/chart\">Aldean<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>They Don&#8217;t Know<\/em>\u00a0(Oct. 1; on Broken Bow Records, distributed through RED Distribution),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/302378\/frank-ocean\/chart\">Frank Ocean<\/a>&#8216;s initially self-released\u00a0<em>Blonde<\/em>\u00a0(Sept. 10; on Ocean&#8217;s own Boys Don&#8217;t Cry),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/298592\/blink-182\/chart\">Blink-182<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>California<\/em>\u00a0(July 23; released through the band&#8217;s Viking Wizard Eyes LLC, licensed to BMG and distributed by ADA) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/418560\/lumineers\/chart\">The Lumineers<\/a>&#8216;\u00a0<em>Cleopatra<\/em>\u00a0(April 30; on Dualtone via ADA).<\/p>\n<p>Brand New made its Billboard 200 debut in 2003 with\u00a0<em>Deja Entendu<\/em>, which arrived on the list dated July 5 of that year, debuting and peaking at No. 63. The group returned in 2006 with\u00a0<em>The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me<\/em>\u00a0(No. 31) and then in 2009 with its previous studio set,\u00a0<em>Daisy<\/em>\u00a0(No. 6).<\/p>\n<p>Brand New scores its first No. 1 a long 14 years, two months and four days after the act&#8217;s chart debut back on July 5, 2003. The last act to wait longer for its first No. 1 was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/300407\/david-bowie\/chart\">David Bowie<\/a>, when\u00a0<em>Blackstar<\/em>\u00a0debuted at No. 1 on Jan. 30, 2016 &#8212;\u00a043 years, nine months and 15 days after he debuted on the list with\u00a0<em>Hunky Dory<\/em>\u00a0on April 15, 1972.\u00a0<em>Blackstar<\/em>, of course, was released two days before Bowie died on January 10, 2016. Previous to Bowie, the last longer wait (than Brand New&#8217;s 14-year gap) was tallied by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/430663\/tyrese\/chart\">Tyrese<\/a>, when his\u00a0<em>Black Rose<\/em>\u00a0bowed at No. 1 on the Aug. 1, 2015-dated list &#8212;\u00a016 years, eight months and 18 days after his self-titled album hit the chart dated Nov. 14, 1998.<\/p>\n<p>At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, rapper\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/7409876\/kodak-black\/chart\">Kodak Black<\/a>\u00a0scores his highest-charting album yet, and second top 10, as\u00a0<em>Project Baby Two<\/em>\u00a0launches with 50,000 units (8,000 in traditional album sales). The mixtape album is powered largely by streams, as the title garnered 39,000 SEA units, translating to 58.6 million on-demand audio streams of the album&#8217;s tracks. Kodak Black previously notched a No. 3-peaking set earlier in 2017 with his debut studio effort,\u00a0<em>Painting Pictures<\/em>(71,000 units in its first week, 15,000 in album sales).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/305702\/kendrick-lamar\/chart\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>&#8216;s former No. 1\u00a0<em>DAMN.<\/em>\u00a0moves 2-3 with 41,000 units (down 5 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Rock band\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/5878877\/neck-deep\/chart\">Neck Deep<\/a>\u00a0notches its first top 10 effort with\u00a0<em>The Peace and the Panic<\/em>bowing at No. 4 with 32,000 units (mostly from traditional album sales, as the set sold 29,000 copies). The Welsh act previously reached No. 17 in 2015 with\u00a0<em>Life&#8217;s Not Out to Get You<\/em>\u00a0(19,000 units in its first week, with 18,000 in sales).<\/p>\n<p><em>The Peace and the Panic<\/em>\u00a0was released through Hopeless Records, and the set is the highest charting effort for the label in more than two years.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/278659\/all-time-low\/chart\">All Time Low<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Future Hearts<\/em>\u00a0was the last Hopeless release to go higher, when it debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the April 25, 2015-dated list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/305612\/keha\/chart\">Kesha<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Rainbow<\/em>\u00a0falls from No. 1 to No. 5 with 31,000 units (down 74 percent),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/7414979\/khalid\/chart\">Khalid<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>American Teen<\/em>\u00a0retreats two spots from its No. 4 peak, as it moves to No. 6 with 29,000 units (down 8 percent), and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/299939\/dj-khaled\/chart\">DJ\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/299939\/dj-khaled\/chart\">Khaled<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Grateful<\/em>\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0which led the list for two weeks in July &#8212;\u00a0falls 3-7 with 27,000 units (down 20 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Also, this week&#8217;s top 10 is apparently brought to you by the letter &#8220;K&#8221;: Kodak Black is No. 2, Kendrick Lamar is No. 3, Kesha is No. 5, Khalid is No. 6 and DJ Khaled is No. 7.<\/p>\n<p>In other\u00a0artist chart news:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/276089\/ed-sheeran\/chart\">Ed\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/276089\/ed-sheeran\/chart\">Sheeran<\/a>&#8216;s former leader\u00a0<em>\u00f7<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Divide<\/em>) slips 6-8 with 26,000 units (down 7 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Rapper\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/6738447\/dave-east\/chart\">Dave East<\/a>\u00a0scores his first top 10 effort, as\u00a0<em>Paranoia: A True Story<\/em>, arrives at No. 9 with just under 26,000 units (12,000 in traditional album sales).
