The set earned 85,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 81,000 were in traditional album sales. The album was released on Sept. 1 and is the act\u2019s first new studio effort in more than seven years, and first for Columbia Records.<\/p>\n<p>The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/chart-beat\/6320099\/billboard-200-makeover-streams-digital-tracks\">multi-metric consumption<\/a>, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new\u00a0Sept. 23-dated chart (where\u00a0<em>American Dream<\/em>debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on\u00a0<em>Billboard<\/em>&#8216;s websites on Tuesday (Sept. 12).<\/p>\n<p>LCD Soundsystem, led by James Murphy, last released a studio set in 2010, when\u00a0<em>This Is Happening<\/em>\u00a0debuted and peaked at No. 10 on the list (its then-highest ranking effort).\u00a0<em>American Dream<\/em>\u00a0is the act\u2019s third charting title &#8212; LCD\u2019s second studio effort,\u00a0<em>Sound of Silver<\/em>, reached No. 46 in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><em>American Dream\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0debut benefits from\u00a0a concert\u00a0ticket\/album\u00a0bundle\u00a0sale\u00a0redemption promotion\u00a0in\u00a0association\u00a0with the act\u2019s U.S. upcoming tour. Other No. 1 albums in 2017 that have profited from such an offer include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/279841\/arcade-fire\/chart\">Arcade Fire<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Everything Now<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/5794072\/the-chainsmokers\/chart\">The Chainsmokers<\/a>\u2019\u00a0<em>Memories\u2026 Do Not Open<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/305595\/katy-perry\/chart\">Katy Perry<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Witness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>LCD Soundsystem is the third act in a row to notch its first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, following\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/7340914\/lil-uzi-vert\/chart\">Lil Uzi Vert<\/a>\u00a0a week ago (with\u00a0<em>Luv Is Rage 2<\/em>) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/297064\/brand-new\/chart\">Brand New<\/a>(<em>Science Fiction<\/em>, on the Sept. 9-dated list). Other acts that collected its first leaders in 2017 include Lorde,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/6281104\/halsey\/chart\">Halsey<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/6627423\/bryson-tiller\/chart\">Bryson Tiller<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/6260934\/logic\/chart\">Logic<\/a>. The last time the chart housed three first-timers in-a-row at No. 1 was a little more than two years ago, when seven acts notched their first No. 1s in succession. Between the June 20 and Aug. 8, 2015-dated lists, Florence + The Machine,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/311949\/muse\/chart\">Muse<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/304129\/james-taylor\/chart\">James Taylor<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/297098\/breaking-benjamin\/chart\">Breaking Benjamin<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/310352\/meek-mill\/chart\">Meek Mill<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/430663\/tyrese\/chart\">Tyrese<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/302577\/future\/chart\">Future<\/a>\u00a0all snagged their first chart toppers.<\/p>\n<p>LCD Soundsystem leads a rather quiet top 10, as\u00a0<em>American Dream<\/em>\u00a0is the only debut in the region. At No. 2, Lil Uzi Vert\u2019s\u00a0<em>Luv Is Rage 2<\/em>\u00a0slips a rung in its second week, with 73,000 units (down 46 percent). XXXTentacion\u2019s\u00a0<em>17<\/em>\u00a0falls 2-3 in its second week with 51,000 units (down 41 percent) while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/305702\/kendrick-lamar\/chart\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>\u2019s former No. 1\u00a0<em>DAMN.<\/em>\u00a0is up a spot to No. 4 with 40,000 units (down 12 percent).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/7414979\/khalid\/chart\">Khalid<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>American Teen<\/em>\u00a0(8-5) benefits from a lack of competition in the top 10, as even though the album is down 1 percent in units (33,000 earned for the week) it climbs three spots to No. 5.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/303738\/imagine-dragons\/chart\">Imagine Dragons<\/a>\u2019\u00a0<em>Evolve<\/em>\u00a0zooms 12-6 with 31,000 units (up 20 percent) and 13,000 copies sold (up 71 percent) after the set was sale-priced in the iTunes Store for $6.99. In terms of digital album sales, the set sold 9,000 copies (up 131 percent).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/7409876\/kodak-black\/chart\">Kodak Black<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Project Baby Two<\/em>\u00a0climbs 9-7 on the Billboard 200 with 30,000 units (down 10 percent), while Logic\u2019s\u00a0<em>Everybody<\/em>\u00a0returns to the top 10 (11-8) with 29,000 units (up 3 percent). It\u2019s the album\u2019s first week in the top 10 since the set opened at No. 1 on the list dated May 27. (In its second week on the list, the album fell straight out of the top 10.)
