The band originally consisted of\u00a0<a title=\"Brad Arnold\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brad_Arnold\">Brad Arnold<\/a>\u00a0(lead vocals\/drums), Todd Harrell (bass), and Matt Roberts (lead guitar, backing vocals). They were soon joined by rhythm guitarist Chris Henderson. The band rose to international fame with their first single, &#8220;<a title=\"Kryptonite (3 Doors Down song)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kryptonite_(3_Doors_Down_song)\">Kryptonite<\/a>&#8220;, which charted in the top three on the\u00a0<a title=\"Billboard Hot 100\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\"><i>Billboard<\/i>\u00a0Hot 100<\/a>\u00a0chart. The band then signed with\u00a0<a title=\"Republic Records\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_Records\">Republic Records<\/a>\u00a0and released their debut album,\u00a0<i><a title=\"The Better Life\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Better_Life\">The Better Life<\/a><\/i>, in 2000. The album was the 11th-best-selling album of the year and was certified\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"RIAA certification\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RIAA_certification\">6x platinum<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. They were later joined by drummer Richard Liles, who played during the tour for their first album.<\/p>\n<p>The band&#8217;s second album,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Away from the Sun\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Away_from_the_Sun\">Away from the Sun<\/a><\/i>, (2002) continued the band&#8217;s success; it debuted at No.\u00a08 on the\u00a0<a title=\"Billboard 200\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_200\"><i>Billboard<\/i>200<\/a>\u00a0chart, went multi-platinum in the U.S. like its predecessor, and spawned the hits &#8220;<a title=\"When I'm Gone (3 Doors Down song)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/When_I%27m_Gone_(3_Doors_Down_song)\">When I&#8217;m Gone<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a title=\"Here Without You\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Here_Without_You\">Here Without You<\/a>&#8220;. The band toured extensively for two years.\u00a0<a title=\"Daniel Adair\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Adair\">Daniel Adair<\/a>\u00a0played drums on tour from 2002 to 2005. This configuration played nearly 1,000 shows across the world following the release of\u00a0<i>Away from the Sun<\/i>. In 2005, Greg Upchurch (<a title=\"Puddle of Mudd\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puddle_of_Mudd\">Puddle of Mudd<\/a>) joined to play drums to replace Adair. 3 Doors Down released their third album,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Seventeen Days\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seventeen_Days\">Seventeen Days<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 2005. The album debuted at No.\u00a01 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum within one month of release. Their fourth, self-titled album,\u00a0<i><a title=\"3 Doors Down (album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/3_Doors_Down_(album)\">3 Doors Down<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2008), also debuted at No.\u00a01 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band&#8217;s fifth studio album,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Time of My Life (3 Doors Down album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_of_My_Life_(3_Doors_Down_album)\">Time of My Life<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2011) debuted at No.\u00a03 on the charts.<\/p>\n<p>Original guitarist Matt Roberts departed in 2012, owing to health issues. He was replaced by Chet Roberts, who was formerly Henderson&#8217;s guitar tech. Harrell was fired from the band in 2013 after being charged with\u00a0<a title=\"Vehicular homicide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vehicular_homicide\">vehicular homicide<\/a>, and was replaced by bassist Justin Biltonen.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ug_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/3_Doors_Down#cite_note-ug-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Worldwide, 3 Doors Down has sold more than 20 million albums.
